A Frustrating Christmas

Christmas this year really has to start improving soon. I'm going to start screaming.

The good. So far the best thing about Christmas so far is Disneyland's Candlelight procession. It was beautiful and really touched my spirit.

Church and every other Christian event has left a lot to be desired. It's our effort to be "contemporary" that has really ruined things.

I'm all about making the gospel relevant. But if you're going to make thing relevant, understand what relevant means. Changing the melody of a popular song does not make it "contemporary."

My company breakfast started with a video of war, disaster, hopelessness and a really somber need for a savior. As true as this is...whatever happed to the joy of Christmas.

I really miss the traditions of Christmas. Carols. Natvity scenes. As old as these traditions are, I still believe it's relevant.

There's 12 more days. Let's hope things improve.

Amen! Being relevant has NOTHING to do with being hip. I hate how the church goes that route and thinks that is actually relevant. Being 'relevant' is being IN (though we know none of us are OF) the world - being salt and light, or a real voice in the culture, which means we have to know and love the culture to be a part of it. That's my take anyway. Relevant does not mean super cool worship, tight bands or groovy art on the church walls. Thanks for letting me ramble.

I know exactly what you mean about the candlelit ceremony at Disneyland. I have so many experiences like that, always have my whole life, whether at the sea, in a concert, watching a film, looking into the eyes of someone I love... that are more profound and of God than any church service.

The good news it was meant to be that way (though church services could learn a lot from the simple beauty of art and God's world), because God is everywhere and seeing him everywhere is when you know your eyes are truly opened.
